US exit preparation

PRE-LAUNCH

Prepare for US renunciation in the right order.

A renunciation appointment should be the result of preparation, not the starting signal for it. Build a working file before choosing travel dates. That file should show what you know, what still needs professional review and which documents support each conclusion. The checklist below is designed for that conversation, not as a substitute for the consulate’s current instructions.

Secure your identity and your place to live.

List every nationality you currently hold and identify the document that proves it. Check passport validity, name differences and the rules for maintaining that nationality. Separately, confirm your right to live in your present country. A passport and a residence permission solve different problems; one should not be assumed to replace the other.

Another nationality is a major practical safeguard. US law does not impose a universal second-citizenship condition on every renunciation: State Department materials expressly discuss the possibility of statelessness. That makes the practical consequences more serious, not less. Do not rely on an unfinished citizenship application, an adviser’s prediction or a future passport delivery when assessing where you can live and travel.

Make the records usable.

Keep a document index with dates and versions. Record missing items as missing instead of filling gaps from memory. Send sensitive records only through the secure channel agreed with the responsible professional; an initial website inquiry needs a short description, not passport scans, account statements or private wallet information.

Follow the selected consulate’s instructions.

Ask the post how it accepts applications and schedules the required interviews. The current DS-4079 instructions describe an initial interview that may be in person, by telephone or by email exchange where available, followed by an in-person interview. They also allow the officer to request further information or another appearance. Do not assume that every post uses the same appointment sequence or that a third party can reserve a guaranteed date.

Complete forms according to the post’s instructions and preserve an unsigned copy where instructed. The personal appearance and oath or affirmation must be handled as directed by the consular officer. The person concerned makes the decision voluntarily; a coordinator organizes the file and logistics but cannot perform the personal act or guarantee approval.

Plan the period after the appointment.

Record the submission date, any outstanding request and the agreed contact method. Keep the distinction between attending an appointment and receiving an approved Certificate of Loss of Nationality. Ask your nationality and tax professionals how the relevant dates affect your situation; do not assume the certificate’s delivery date answers every legal or tax question.

Before the appointment, discuss future US travel, banking documentation and benefits. Former citizens travel under the requirements applicable to their foreign nationality and circumstances; entry is not guaranteed. Social Security payments abroad also have nationality and residence conditions. Use the SSA screening tool as an initial check, then resolve your own facts with the appropriate office. Keep a closeout calendar for filings and institutional updates.

Before you decide

Common questions.

Can I use this checklist to submit everything myself?

It helps organize the questions and records. The selected consulate’s current requirements and the advice of the professionals engaged for your case determine the actual submission.

Must I pay for a session to ask about the pre-launch service?

No. Send a concise inquiry through Contact and choose US exit inquiry. Do not include sensitive documents in the first message.

Your next step

Turn the guide into a working list.

US exit remains pre-launch. You can ask about the opening without paying for a session. A screening call can establish whether present planning work is suitable.
